GLP-1 and Nutrition: Supporting Your Body During Weight-Loss Medication

GLP-1 receptor agonists (semaglutide, tirzepatide) have transformed obesity treatment. But rapid weight loss creates unique nutritional challenges.

The Muscle Loss Problem

A 2021 meta-analysis found that up to 40% of weight lost on GLP-1 agonists can be lean muscle mass. Muscle is your metabolic engine.

Key support: adequate protein (1.2-1.6 g/kg), resistance exercise 2-3x per week, vitamin D optimization.

The Reduced Intake Problem

Appetite suppression means overall nutrient intake decreases. Micronutrient deficiencies can develop. Meal timing and nutrient density become more important than volume.

GI Side Effects

Nausea, constipation, and reflux affect food choices and supplement timing. Work with a healthcare provider to manage side effects while maintaining nutritional adequacy.
